Day 8: The Story of “We Three Kings”

Few carols capture the reverent mystery of the Magi’s journey like “We Three Kings.” With its solemn melody and Scripture-rich lyrics, this hymn invites us to reflect on the hearts of those who traveled far to worship the newborn King.

How the Song Began

In 1857, John Henry Hopkins Jr., a young minister and seminary teacher, wrote “We Three Kings” for a Christmas pageant. He longed to help children understand the story recorded in Matthew 2—how wise men from the East followed a star in search of the promised Messiah.

The song’s enduring message and moving tune quickly found their way beyond that first pageant. It was published not long after and became a treasured part of Christmas worship across churches and homes.

The Meaning in the Lyrics

Each verse gives voice to one of the wise men, emphasizing the spiritual meaning behind their gifts:

Gold — offered to honor Jesus as King.
Frankincense — a fragrant incense, recognizing His divinity and priestly role.
Myrrh — a burial spice, foreshadowing His sacrificial death.

These were not arbitrary gifts. Each one was a prophetic declaration of who Jesus was and what He came to do.

The repeated chorus—

“O star of wonder, star of night…”

—calls us to remember the faithful leading of God, whose light draws seeking hearts to His Son.

A Biblical Principle

“When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. After entering the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him.”—Matthew 2:10–11 (AMP)

The wise men’s journey reflects a heart posture we’re invited to imitate:

God draws those who earnestly seek Him.
Every offering given in worship, no matter how small, is precious in His sight.
When we behold Jesus for who He truly is, the only right response is joyful worship.

Why This Song Still Matters

When we sing “We Three Kings,” we are drawn into the unfolding story of redemption:

Jesus is King of Kings — worthy of all honor and obedience.
He is God with us — deserving of reverent worship.
He is our Savior — come to redeem and restore all who believe.

This carol also reminds us to keep our eyes fixed on the “star” of His Spirit—trusting His faithful leading even when the road ahead is long or uncertain.

A Gentle Reflection for Families

As you share this carol with your children, you might say:

“The wise men didn’t come to get something from Jesus. They came to give.”

Help them see:

We are invited to seek Jesus not just once a year, but every day.
We, too, can bring Him our gifts—our time, our praise, our willingness to love and obey.
The greatest joy is found when we bow our hearts in worship and recognize Jesus for who He truly is.
