Day 9: The Story of “Carol of the Bells”

There’s something unmistakable about the opening notes of “Carol of the Bells.” Its cascading melody seems to dance through the air like joy made audible: calling us to listen, to rejoice, and to remember the wonder of the season. Though the song is now heard around the world at Christmas time, its roots reach back more than a century to a faraway land.

A Melody From a Folk Song

In 1916, Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych composed a choral work titled “Shchedryk”—a word meaning “bountiful.” It was based on an old folk chant that celebrated the coming of spring and the hope of a fruitful year.

The song’s signature four-note motif created a musical rhythm that felt like bells ringing—layer upon layer, rising with excitement and energy. Though not originally tied to Christmas, its tone carried a sense of joyful anticipation and celebration.

A New Story for Christmas

Two decades later, in 1936, American composer Peter Wilhousky heard Shchedryk and was captivated. He wrote new English lyrics, transforming the folk tune into what we now know as “Carol of the Bells.” Rather than spring’s bounty, the new lyrics celebrated the joyous news of Christ’s birth; bells ringing to announce the coming of the Savior and the glad tidings of the season.

Though the words do not retell the Christmas story directly, the feeling they create is unmistakable: joy breaking through the darkness.

A Biblical Principle

“Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people.”—Luke 2:10 (AMP)

Just as the angels filled the skies that night with rejoicing, “Carol of the Bells” fills our ears with a musical expression of that same message. Its notes seem to echo the angelic call: “Rejoice! Christ has come!”

Let us not miss that in the midst of cultural noise, the heart of Christmas remains unchanged: Jesus has come, and His coming is cause for great joy.

Why This Song Still Matters

When we hear or sing “Carol of the Bells,” we are invited to remember:

The birth of Jesus is still good news—timeless, personal, and powerful.
True joy is not quiet or private—it overflows and rings out for others to hear.
God’s greatest abundance is not material, but spiritual—His Son, given freely to us.

This carol, with its layers of history and harmony, reminds us to lift our eyes and hearts again to the wonder of Emmanuel—God with us.

A Gentle Reflection for Families

As you listen to or sing this carol with your children, help them hear more than just a tune. You might say:

“Can you hear the joy in the music? That’s the sound of good news, Jesus has come!”

Remind them:

Our celebration is not just about tradition, it’s rooted in a Person.
Just as bells ring out across a town, our joy can ring out to others: through our words, our attitudes, and our thankfulness.
God’s presence is His greatest gift, not just for Christmas, but for every day we walk with Him.

Let this song stir joy in your home today, not from the world’s abundance, but from the One who came to bring joy that never fades.
